There are six board members, four from Somaliland and two from the US. Ahmed Awale, the president, helped found and is currently chair of Candlelight Organization, a prominent environmental organization in Somaliland. He is a faculty member at the University of Hargesia where he teaches wildlife science. Mary Barkworth, the secretary/treasurer, recently retired from teaching plant taxonomy and directing a herbarium. She is using that experience to help build Somaliland’s capabilities in the various biodiversity sciences. Abdisalam Yassin brings extensive experience as a university administrator to the board. Prior to becoming president of Shifa University he served as the vice-president of the University of Hargeisa. Anjanette DeCarlo has been working for over twenty years in the general areas of sustainable development, women’s empowerment, and conflict resolution. She brings many years of experience both as a development consultant and program coordinator to the board. Shukri Haji Ismail is Minister of the Environment and Rural Development in Somaliland and a member of Candlelight’s executive. She has been actively involved in promoting sustainable development, fair trade, and women’s health and education for almost 20 years. In December of 2011 Shukri was recognized for her dedication, contribution to development work and promotion of peace by being awarded the International Crisis Group’s (ICG) Award In Pursuit of Peace.Warsame M. Ahmed is the Director of Research and Community Service at the University of Hargeisa. He is an economist and the former Dean of Hargeisa School of Economics. He is an economist by profession. Warsame is also researcher and research coordinator for the project Governing economic hubs and flows in Somali East Africa (GOVSEA) at University of hargesa with Roskilde University.
